Karen Lawrence

Current Position
Director of Delivery at Energy Saving Trust

Sustainability Experience
Karen is a passionate advocate of sustainability in both her personal and professional life. As Director of Delivery at the Energy Saving Trust she has led the development of the network of Energy Saving Trust Advice Centres across the UK, expanding their remit to cover microgeneration and transport advice as well as energy efficiency and more recently, water and waste. Karen has also led the drive to localise and tailor the various advice and support services that the Trust offers to citizens, Trade Partners, Local Authorities, and Communities to make then truly accessible and relevant to enable citizens across the UK to take positive carbon reduction actions.

At home, Karen is an active member of her local community group on sustainability and is also a school Governor holding the sustainability portfolio and has recently successfully supported the school to achieve their Green Flag under the ECO Schools programme. Previously she was Chair of the Local branch of the National Childbirth Trust, during which time she strove to make the support services offered by the NCT as accessible as possible to all new parents in her area.

Definition of Sustainable Development and why it is important for London
For me, sustainability is about balancing current and future needs, aspirations and behaviours. It's ultimately about the quality of our lives here in London for both current and future generations. Whether at home, at work or in the wider community, we all have a role to play in considering the impacts of our actions on others.  London is a forward looking city and occupies a leadership role within the UK and beyond. We need to make sure that sustainability in all its forms is part of the future reality for Londoners. Where London successfully leads, others will follow.
