Definition of Sustainable Development and why it is important for London
The sustainability goal is "Getting the balance right". I see the greatest opportunity as managing the difficult balance of economic growth, environmental responsibility (climate change, waste, air quality etc.) and the broad range of social issues (child poverty, inequality, unemployment, exclusion etc.) that exist within London. Growth depends on utilising the full capacity and capability of the diverse range of skills, ideas and cultures that exist in London's people. Harnessing and developing this capability is our key challenge.
Providing an inclusive environment and a level playing field where everyone is able to make a valuable contribution is made more difficult by the diverse range of languages, cultures and backgrounds of the people that live in London. But this, in its self, is also our strength. The richness of different experiences and backgrounds can bring new approaches and innovative ways of doing things - a fantastic opportunity and, in many areas, an under-utilised resource.
