London Leaders celebrate London
Sustainability Weeks

London Leaders celebrated the 6-month anniversary of the launch of the programme in style in London's Living Room, on Thursday 19th June.

Leaders, London Sustainable Development Commissioners, and various guests attended to swap ideas and to be inspired. The evening also provided an opportunity for some of the Leaders to showcase the progress they've made on achieving their commitments to date.

The evening kicked off with a video presentation of the Arts and Ecology event earlier this month. Attendees also heard Lutfun Hussain speak about her work in the Coriander Club at Spitalfields City Farm.

Dusty Gedge painted an enthralling picture of what London might look like if more green roofs were retrofitted and announced the pending installation of a wildflower meadow on the roof of So-Ho based National Magazine Company.

Solitaire Townsend, who later in the evening was presented with the 'Women in Ethical Business' Entrepreneur of the Year award, then chaired a lively audience discussion on some key elements of the programme's future. Observations and contributions from this part of the evening will help to inform the next phase of the programme.

Another high profile female entrepreneur, managing director of Divine Chocolate, Sophi Tranchell, wrapped up the official business of the evening. Sophi gave a brief overview of how her Fairtrade chocolate company works with cocoa farmers in Ghana to create a sustainable and democratic working cooperative. The cooperative invests in their own projects to improve the farmers' living, health and education standards, and farming productivity.

The London Sustainable Development Commission hopes that this event, fittingly held during London Sustainability Weeks, will fuel momentum to expand the programme. This month's anniversary marks the start of the next phase, with the LSDC having committed to recruiting a new team of Leaders by the end of the year.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY on June 5th provided a fitting opportunity for London Leaders Michaela Crimmin and Joseph Oliver to launch the Art and Ecology Day 2009.

The event aimed to raise awareness and gather ideas and inspiration for the first annual Art and Ecology day and the evening gave an exciting glimpse of what could be in store in 2009.

Along with inputs from a varied field of experts, guests were treated to a poetry reading from Mario Petrucci, and live music from Marmaduke Dando and his band, The Mooche.

The event marked a significant step for both Michaela Crimmin and Joseph Oliver in realising their goals and commitments under the London Leaders programme. Both see the value and importance of involving London's arts and entertainment industry in establishing sustainability projects.

Michaela, Head of Arts at the RSA, has committed to engaging London's cultural and creative community in sustainability and wants to harness the initiative and unique perspectives of artists. Meanwhile, Joe and Bash Creations, aim to make sustainable entertainment events and venues a reality. Both Leaders hope that the Arts and Ecology Day will provide an opportunity to showcase the role the artistic community can play in a sustainable London.
