The London Sustainable Development Commission's London Leaders programme newsletter

Welcome to the last 2008 issue of London Leading. Last week the London Sustainable Development Commission (LSDC) was proud to announce the second group of new Leaders at the London Leaders Annual Event at the Royal Society. We were excited and inspired by the wealth of excellent applications for the 2009 programme. We are also confident that the 16 new leaders will be inspiring you all with their stories over the coming months as they build upon the achievements of 2008.

Hope you enjoy this update and remember you can always get in touch with the programme via our website: www.londonsdc.org.

They make it real and show how dealing with London's social, economic and environmental issues can also help London lead action on big issues like climate change. Our first leaders put sustainable thinking into practice. I now welcome our next leaders who will bring it alive in their own way."

FORTHCOMING EVENT: Broadcasting Green

Watch this space for more details about the launch of Broadcasting Green in early 2009 as London Leader Solitaire Townsend and her team at Futerra work with representatives from London's film, TV and advertising sectors to address the portrayal of sustainable lifestyles on screen.

STORIES FROM 2008

The LSDC extends a special thanks to the first group of London Leaders who over 2008 championed projects and campaigns to demonstrate sustainability in action and deliver improvements in quality of life.

These projects included: retrofitting green roofs in central London; publishing a community cookbook; launching an annual Arts and Ecology campaign within the cultural sector; establishing Sustain72 - a community of private sector housing professionals working to promote sustainability;  training young refugee leaders; and running healthy eating projects in housing estates across London.

Importantly, the group of Leaders were able to work collectively and collaboratively to find new solutions, learn from each other and offer support. We will continue to keep you updated with their work and wish them all the best for 2009.
